How the volumes are made and shelved

biblios is one uniform edition bound in navy cloth. Each post is a volume, each of its sections a signature, and every plate says how true it is.

A shelf, not a feed

The front page is a shelf of spines ordered by call number, so volumes on neighbouring subjects stand together whatever their date. Lift a spine to read its catalogue card; open it to read the volume.

A volume opens on a title page: a combed endpaper on the left, the title leaf on the right. Its sections are signatures, lettered from B (A is the title page), and the running head carries a collation staircase that steps down one notch per signature, the way binders check a gathered book.

At the end of every volume, Shelved beside it shows its neighbours on the shelf. Next and previous come from the shelf, never from dates.

Reading a call number

A call number such as 697.93 D23h 2026 has three parts. The class is the nearest Dewey section for the subject. The cutter is the house’s own: the initial of the key subject, two digits, and the initial of the title. Then the year. The call number also seeds the paper: the combing of the endpapers and the cloth of the spine are drawn from it, so no two volumes share one.

The hundred of the class picks the tape on the spine label, the card and the kicker.

Every plate says how true it is

Figures are drawn live in the browser, labelled by a placer that measures every word, and checked at five widths before a volume is published. Each plate carries a bone label with its fidelity, five cells filled to the level, and a short note.

Reference marks tie a number in the text to the one place in a plate where it applies. They run in this order, at most four to a signature:

Numbers live once

Every number in a volume is stored once, with its source, and the text, the stats and the figures all read it from there. A number without a source is drawn as illustrative and says so. Under each plate, Data lists the values it was drawn from; the sources close the volume, numbered.

Before a volume is published, each plate is rendered at five widths and passes six gates: structure, label placement, text over ink, contrast, runtime and a lint of its code. The certificate is kept with the volume.
