The model writes; code draws

Each volume starts as a brief: what every plate must show, and which mistakes it must not repeat. The spec ties each number to its source. From there it is code. The kit fits the plate to your screen, measures and places every label, and draws it live. Before anything publishes, a browser proofs every plate, and a plate that fails goes back.

Audit · folio

A model draws blind

In folio, an earlier experiment, a model wrote whole illustrated pages in one pass. 72 of every 100 bytes it wrote were drawing: paths and coordinates that nothing rendered until a reader did. Nothing checked them either. Folio's hand-written demo labels an aqueduct tier 35 arches and draws 24.

Prototype · Labels

Labels are where drawings break

A label typed at a fixed offset is right at one width. Proofed at 29 widths from 320 px to 1,440 px, one prototype section failed 581 layout checks with fixed offsets, and 4 with a placer that measures every label and knows where the drawing is. Those 4 went to the key, never onto the art.

Build · Certificate

A plate that fails does not ship

The site is built on a server with no browser, so it cannot look at a plate. It reads a certificate instead: the verdict of every gate, and a hash of the spec, the drawing code, the kit and each number the plate uses. Change any of them and the certificate goes stale; the build refuses the volume until the plate is proofed again.

The gates are plain rules. The spec must validate. Labels may not overlap, leave the plate or shrink below 10 px. A label may not sit on drawing, and its text must stand clear of whatever is behind it. The page must draw without errors, and the drawing code may not type its own colours, fonts or words.
